How to activate your Heap Session Replay trial
Badge

Get full context on every user action with integrated session replay. Heap directs you to the exact point in a session that you care about, saving you time and effort.

The video below demonstrates how to activate Session Replay on Heap.

There’s no need to update your Heap Javascript code but you do need to have a role tied to Manage Data Capture permissions. By default, Admins and Architects have these permissions.

How do you activate sessions only on certain pages or domains within a project?

Hey, bad news. It’s quite impossible to evaluate it when it comes up like this 😞 Tried clearing cache but still no go.

Hi @Trevin - When you activate Session Replay, there’s a field where you can specify domains and pages you want Session Replay to ignore.

Hi @Evelyn - Yow - you are correct. I’ve escalated this to Heap Support.

Thanks.  The current rules for inclusion/exclusion are too limited. Would be more useful if it could also support wildcards.

We’ve got urls like this:

https://company.com/plans/1/foo

https://company.com/plans/2/foo

https://company.com/plans/3/foo

The ruleset looks like it requires absolute URLs.

Two resources that can help you troubleshoot if replays are not rendering the way you expect:

@Trevin -

We don't support wildcards for URL allowlists and denylists, but we do match all URLs that contain the listed URL as a substring. For example, adding 'heap.io' to a denylist would block replay capture on 'app.heap.io' as well.

In your case, you could exclude 'https://company.com/plans' to block those URLs with a single entry.

Another resource for those who are wondering what Session Replays do: https://heap.io/topics/session-replays-recordings

I keep getting “Failed to set up Session Replay. Please try again later.”

I’ve been getting this for over a week - so it doesn’t seem like a passing issue.

Thoughts?

Hi David,

Sorry to hear you are running into this! I would recommend trying this in a different browser and/or checking for any extensions (adblockers, etc.) that may be preventing the JavaScript on the page from firing as expected.

Best,
