New vs Returning Users : segments not seen?

Just want to verify something.

The article here says heap should have a default segment called New Users. This segment doesn’t exist in my list of segments.

Have things been changed since this article was published?

OR

Does this option not exist for all accounts by default?

If either is the case, how could I manually create a segment for new users?

Hi marta_mindease,

The heap created segment cannot be found in the segments section but you can definitely use the default one by following the below steps.

1. Navigate to Analyze > Usage over time

2. Select More > Multiple metrics

3. select User behavior > Users who are in segment > New Users

 

There is another way where you can create a segment of your New Users by following the below steps:

  1. Navigate to Definitions > New Definition > New Segment
  2. From the drop down select “ Users who have started” > Sessions/Pageview/(Any event which you consider your user to be completing in order to be a new user).
  3. From the next drop down Select (day, week, month, etc.) 

Explanation: For ex: If you select a date range of 7days, heap will consider people who started doing the event for the first time within that 7days time frame as New users.
