When it comes to understanding your users, there are few tools more powerful than user segmentation. Get all sorts of insight into how your product or site is working.

The specifics will of course be unique to your product. The more ways you can slice up the data, the more likely you are to stumble onto an underserved segment.

See how your site is performing across the user segments that matter to your business. To start breaking your data down and making it more actionable, group your users according to significant characteristics, behaviors, or other attributes.

To create your segment, go to Data in the left side menu of Heap. In the next column you will see Segments. Once in the Segment section, you will see Define segment in the upper right.

You can use a mix of behavior-based and user properties to create your user segment in Heap. Use the And <> Or toggle to refine your segment to limit to the exact set of users you are targeting.

Once you have added you behaviors and/or user properties be sure to name and save your segment. Depending on your permission level, you can save the segment as personal or shared segment.

Examples of some common segments:

SaaS

New trial users

Subscription type equals trial and users who have started doing session in the past 90 days

E-Commerce

Window shoppers

Users who have done greater than 5 sessions at anytime and users who have not done order confirmed at anytime

CS

Possible churn customers

Subscription type equals paid and users who have not done session in the past 90 days

The user properties you have in your account will vary depending on what your team has implemented. Here is a link to the AddUserProperties API.

Build out some segments that help you focus your analysis on the subset of users you are interested in. Once you have saved you segments they will be available to use in your analysis as chart modifiers. These appear as Filter with in segment or not in segment. In Group by and in the Compare User.
